Mwananchi mzalendo Lyrics from Daima - Eric Wainaina
A country is defined by its borders. At least that is what geographers think and hold facts. However, a country is made up of the people, the culture, famous landmarks, and cuisines among many other things. Kenya is a beautiful country with a vibrant personality born from the struggle for self-rule and forged by the tireless efforts of our original forefathers, and at the present is ailing. Our flag is a symbolic way to tell the world this is our beloved country, yet every day the media is awash with news of wanton corruption and burdens all the more piling up. It helps to think about our past hopes, 50 years ago when life was very positive. A growing economy is ready to thrive in a place rich with natural resources. A nation with an educated class. This time was created by the sweat, sacrifice, and brains of the pre-independence generation. At this time Kenya was possible. What was Kenya like during the pre-independence era?
A growing economy is ready to thrive in a place rich with natural resources. A nation with an educated class.
When we attained independence, Kenya was the darling of the world. A strategic country that will be the guiding hand to the other sibling nations. In Africa where the celebrations of independence were teeming everywhere. However, the possibility of Kenya was compromised by greed. Suddenly the few amassed wealth meant for the majority. Kenya fought for and dreamt of was now becoming a distant reality.

The beautiful Kenyan flag majestically.
To our present miseries, more than 50 years after our independence, to a generation of still hardworking and hopeful Kenyans, ready to conquer and live in a just society. Once again, the sins of our forefathers still haunt us today. The greed of the few is deeply entrenched with an even bigger appetite for illegal wealth stolen from the majority. The dream of a Kenya seems impossible every day. When we witness a seemingly classless political leadership lacking in sensible politicking but engaged in a game of dynasties in the coming elections three years away. An exhausted populace, suffering from anxiety and facing the closure of their businesses due to a failing economy. The rising national and personal debt. All this has encouraged escapism. That gained momentum during the past elections, a deep desire to travel to a biblical land called Canaan, where justice and equality are adhered to. What is Kenya during our present times?
To our present miseries, more than 50 years after our independence, to a generation of still hardworking and hopeful Kenyans, ready to conquer and live in a just society.
Kenya is possible in the fulfillment of our future hopes. The realization of a virtuous political class that leads by logic. The existence of an enlightened and brave electorate demands their rights and follows up to their fulfillment. Kenya as a fully mature democracy is presently at the right time to make our hopes a reality if we keep on and purge the vices in our midst through constant vigilance and shared responsibility. The renewed push for accountability for the country’s wealth is a very good gesture of a nation ready to confront the vices. The realization of our country’s conscience positions the younger generation to be hopeful, which this generation of economically and socially hardened still believes in. Together Kenya is possible.
